The Corded Ware Culture was characterized by vessels decorated by cord impressions on the surface of the pot applied when the clay was wet.
It spread across the continent from central Europe around 2500 BC. There were a number of regional variants of the Corded Ware Culture, its initial stages being associated with a wave of migrations from the steppes of southern Russia into Europe.
Corded ware vessels are often found with individual burials in small round barrows. Stone battle axes are also typical of the Corded Ware Culture. Settlements are very rare.
Corded Ware vessels and Beakers are often found in the same graves, suggesting that both cultures were involved in long distance trade and exchange systems in Europe.
